Over 45,000 children in Australia are in
Out-of-Home Care.
Foster care is essential for providing safe and nurturing environments for these children and young people.
At Burdekin, we offer two main types of fostering: Long-Term Foster Care and Respite Care. Each type plays a vital role in helping young people build a strong foundation for their future.
Long-term fostering
Long-term foster care is when a young person lives in your home or in a home provided by Burdekin.
Our goal is for the young person to remain with their Foster Carer until they reach adulthood. This type of care offers children and young people stability, consistency, and hope for the future.
Long-term foster care can also include relative or kinship care, where family members or close friends take on the caring role.
Respite care
As a Respite Carer, you provide a temporary home for a young person, giving their primary carer a much-needed break. This arrangement can be in your home or theirs.
Respite care typically involves caring for a young person for one weekend a month or for a week or two during school holidays. It creates an additional support network for the young person, ensuring they feel safe and cared for, even when their primary carer is away.
Benefits of becoming a Foster Carer
Fostering is a rewarding opportunity that allows you to make a meaningful impact in a young person's life. It is both a privilege and a joy to be part of their journey, guiding and supporting them as they navigate challenges and embrace new experiences.
As a Burdekin Foster Carer, you will:
- Provide a safe, caring, and nurturing environment that helps a young person reach their full potential.
- Guide a young person as they grow and develop.
- Give a young person a strong foundation to build their confidence and achieve their goals.
Being a Burdekin Foster Carer means you are part of a team dedicated to empowering young people. Together, we work on fostering resilience, hope, and the skills necessary for young people to thrive.
Can’t be a Foster Carer? Volunteer with Burdekin!
If you’re unsure about fostering full-time or don’t have the time required, volunteering might be the perfect fit for you!
You can teach a young person valuable skills, like how to drive, cook, or even practice a new language. Simple activities like going for a walk or sharing a cup of coffee can make a big difference.
Many of our current Foster Carers start their journey by volunteering and we have a range of volunteer roles in Sydney to suit your skills and location.
NOTE: The application process for volunteering is not as comprehensive as becoming a full-time foster carer.
