What sets Burdekin apart?
Supporting our Foster Carers differently.

Burdekin sets itself apart from other Out-of-Home Care organisations with its unique supported model. Recognising the demands of caring, Burdekin provides personalised support tailored to meet the needs of both the carer and the young person.

Housing assistance for our Burdekin Foster Carers

If you don’t have your own house or apartment with a spare room, we may assist by securing suitable housing and covering the majority of the rent. We also offer support with rental or mortgage payments to help support carers. We operate in Sydney.

    Valuing you financially

You can still work while being a Burdekin Foster Carer—fostering is about creating a family environment and working for a living can set a positive example. However, it is important that you have time to spend with the young person in your care and are committed to meeting their needs. For this reason, part-time work or a flexible schedule is often necessary to support the young person's commitments. In some situations, our support professionals can help when you are not available. Foster Carers in NSW also receive an allowance to help cover the costs of day-to-day care. This allowance is not considered income, so it won’t affect your taxes or government benefits.

    Practical and emotional support

We provide a team of professionals to support you, along with 24-hour on-call help, respite care, and ongoing training. Our caseloads are much smaller than in traditional foster care, so we can offer you more personalised support, you will also receive a dedicated Carer Support Specialist. We are here for you at every stage of your fostering journey.

    Flexibility

The length of your commitment can be tailored to fit your needs. If you can only commit for a couple of years, we can work with that. If you can commit for longer, that’s a great bonus!

    Inclusivity

We welcome diversity—all cultures, religions, non-religions, singles, couples, married, divorced, retired, LGBTQ+ individuals, and people living with disabilities. If you can provide love and care, you are welcome to join us.

    Focus

We specialise in fostering tweens and teenagers, ages 8 to 17 in NSW. This is a critical time in a young person’s life when they are often the most vulnerable and need the greatest support.

    Personalisation

At Burdekin, we truly value our Foster Carers. We take the time to get to know you so we can match you with a young person who will thrive in your home. Each Foster Carer’s home is different, and our program is personalised to meet the unique needs of both the carer and the young person.

Every young person deserves to grow up in a loving, stable home...

... but for thousands, this is not their reality.

Right now, there are children and young people in your community who need a safe, nurturing environment while they grow.

Becoming a Foster Carer gives you an opportunity to make a profound difference in a young person’s life while experiencing the joy and fulfilment that comes with opening your heart and home.

We know that nurturing teenagers has challenges and requires courage, so we adapt and work with you to give you what you need. That way, you can focus on the most important thing—giving our young people what they need.

The training provides you with a detailed perspective on what caring might be like and helps you determine if it is the right fit for you.

  • 4. Carer assessment

The Foster Carer assessment is a three-part interview process covering your life, motivations, experience with children and young people, how caring will affect your life, your flexibility, finances, and how you handle adversity and stress. We find out about your support network, speak with your family members, and complete several reference checks. You will also have a ‘yarn’ with an Aboriginal Cultural Advisor to assess your suitability to care for Aboriginal young people.
