Host a BBQ Block Party for Burdekin

We love nothing better than a good Aussie barbecue and the timeless sausage sanga! Unless, of course, you are vegetarian or vegan, in which case you’ll enjoy vegan sausages.

Why not make it a block party and invite the whole neighbourhood, make it a celebration of food, culture and community? Even bring your own twist to the classic snag and celebrate diversity and culinary traditions in your community!

A block party BBQ is great way to bring people together, while raising money and awareness for a cause that is close to your heart – such as youth homelessness.

Planning your BBQ

Planning a community Block party BBQ takes a little planning, but not much! Consider hosting your event at a particular time of year:

  • Your very own birthday fundraiser
  • A summer BBQ
  • A public holiday BBQ
  • Grand Final Day
  • Harmony Day
  • Youth Homelessness Matters Day
  • Welcoming new neighbours to the area
  • Another day of significance for you
  • A Bunnings Sausage Sizzle – a 25 year institution! Bunnings in the community.

Where should you host your BBQ?

  • Park, beach, street – public spaces, just check with your local council to see if you need a permit!
  • Your local farmers market, school fete or sports club event.

Spread the word

You might have access to a WhatsApp group for people in your community – let them know about your event! Spread the word via friends, family, neighbours and ask any groups that you are involved with – school, a sports club, a community club, RSL and your employer to share your fundraiser – they might even support the event in some way.

Share the event on your socials, ask your local radio and/or paper for a free advertisement slot. If you use social media, please tag us so we are aware of your posts and can share them if appropriate.

Woolies and Coles grants

Your local Woolworths and Coles stores offer community grants and the money could help you to buy everything you need for your BBQ! Coles Community Support Applications and Woolworths Community Contributions could be of help.

Go extra

If you love organising these sorts of events, you might like to contact any businesses in your area to help and people generally do like to help if they know that it’s for a good cause, especially if they can get a shout out for it too! You could organise a raffle at the BBQ too.

Employer involvement

Don’t be afraid to ask your employer to assist – most organisations today do want to be involved in corporate fundraising for a number of reasons:

  • Good publicity
  • Morale boosting
  • Social responsibility

Corporate fundraising is a great way for organisations to show that they are committed to the community and to causes that matter – some employers will eagerly back you and some will even seek to get involved themselves and pay for volunteer days. Ask your employer about payroll giving and dollar matching!

Christmas fundraising update

Christmas Fundraising Campaign 2022

A quick update on our Christmas Fundraising Campaign. As you probably know, we aimed to raise money for our Youth Development Fund as well as fulfill the gift wishes of our young people.

As always, our community was incredibly generous with the supply of gifts, vouchers and cash,, all of which goes directly to the children and young people in our care.

As our organisation continues to grow and the number of young people in our care too, your support is more important than ever. YOU, make a huge difference to the vulnerable young people in our care.

Below is a glimpse into who made Christmas 2022 possible, there are so many more behind the scenes.

In total the value of the gifts, vouchers and cash reached $29,870. With more than 100 children and young people to shop for, we were able to bring many smiles on Christmas morning. Gifts were delivered by our very own elves, who also deserve huge credit for their tireless work making sure that each and every young person had a special Christmas.

Thank you so, so much to our amazing community for making moments like this happen – you guys are amazing! We look forward to another year making things happen with you by our side!!

Home Sweet is back!

Five years after the initial Home Sweet event, and three years since the follow up event, the Link Wentworth team are back at it again, raising much needed funds for homelessness with Home Sweet 2023.

Home Sweet commenced in 2017 and now, five years later, its needed even more due to the ever worsening housing crisis. There are more than 116,000 people experiencing homelessness across Australia and more than 17,000 Australian children under the age of 12 have no permanent home.

The Home Sweet campaign has raised over $300,000 across the two events in 2017 and 2019. This year, with your help, we hope to raise $200,000 plus. Money raised will be donated to The Burdekin Association (youth homelessness service), Women’s Community Shelters (providing safe accommodation for women escaping domestic violence) and Link Wentworth Scholarship Program (helping social housing tenants access education and employment training).

The event will be hosted on 17 March 2023 at Freshwater Surf Club with an added option to join virtually.

What’s next?

Donate, support a “sleepee” or sleep over yourself at Freshwater Surf Club on17th March 2023 to raise money for this valuable cause. You can also join virtually on the night by sleeping out in your car or backyard. Our CEO and some of our staff members will be sleeping over at the event and you will have the option to donate to the organisation or to an individual. More information.

Burdekin Annual Charity Golf Day

After one of our busiest years and multiple postponements, for reasons beyond our control, our Annual Charity Golf Day is almost here!

Held in the unique and natural surroundings of Cromer Golf Club, the day brings us together as a community with the common goal of wanting to do something for vulnerable youth in our community, alleviating youth homelessness, improving transitions to adulthood and providing the skills necessary for a viable future.

The morning starts with the buzz and excitement of what’s ahead. The order of the day is meeting new people, reconnecting with friends and acquaintances, engaging with like-minded people, building relationships, meeting potential customers, sharing ideas, not to mention playing golf and possibly winning some amazing prizes!

Our true power lies in our connections within our community, which is why this event is so important to us. We are thankful to those who have stuck with us throughout the various postponements of the day. We can’t wait to see you all! And did we mention it’s a full house?
